Betting data feed definition for sportsbook operators. How real-time sports data powers odds, in-play markets, and results settlement in online betting platforms.

Definition

Betting Data Feed: A real-time or near-real-time stream of sports event data delivered to a sportsbook platform through an API connection. The feed includes event metadata (fixtures, teams, players, venues), pre-match statistics and form data, live match data (scores, game events, possession, player actions), odds and pricing data (compiled by the data provider or by the operator's trading team), and results data for bet settlement.

How It Works

Data feeds operate through two primary delivery mechanisms. REST APIs deliver point-in-time data through request-response calls — suitable for pre-match data that updates on slower cycles (hourly or daily). Streaming connections (WebSocket or server-sent events) deliver continuous real-time updates — essential for in-play data where scores, odds, and market states change by the second.

A sportsbook platform typically consumes multiple data feeds simultaneously: a fixtures feed for scheduling, a pre-match odds feed for pricing, a live data feed for in-play markets, and a results feed for settlement. These may come from a single provider or from multiple providers depending on the operator's coverage requirements.

Why Latency Matters

For in-play betting, data latency — the delay between a real-world event and its appearance in the data feed — is the most critical quality metric. A goal scored in a football match must be reflected in the data feed within seconds. If the feed is slow, the operator's odds are stale: bettors who see the goal on television can bet at pre-goal prices before the platform adjusts. This creates a systematic loss for the operator.

Tier 1 data providers deliver major sport event data with latencies under 2 seconds. Lower-tier providers or less-covered sports may have latencies of 5–15 seconds, which limits the viability of in-play betting on those events.

Coverage and Quality

Data feeds vary enormously in coverage breadth. Major providers cover 50,000+ events per year across football, basketball, tennis, cricket, and other sports. Coverage depth also matters — a provider may list a football match but only offer basic data (score, cards), while a premium feed includes possession, shots, corners, expected goals, and player-level statistics. Deeper data enables more market types, which drives bettor engagement and operator GGR.
